This code that was writen to show how to make an log-in system on your site (but you can also use it as an template). But no just that. It also features a security agains breaking the password through brute force (= trying a lot of passwords). And different access levens, an easy to use admin interface. You can even make user into admins, delete there accounts and activate there account's (the normally recieves an code by email to activate the acount).

Helpful peace of code, however, getting problems with undefined POST-variables in activate.php.
It's like the header() function does not transfer POST parameters.
I'm new to PHP, so it should be a configuration or preference error...?

works good, it creates the my SQL entry
my free host dosent have mail() so i removed the activation and set it to auto activate but even if a user is activated it says "please log in" i checked the membersonly.inc.php which the error lies in, it is some where in there i found where it gives me there error message, its a die errorany ideas? im about to thourly check the code

Ok. I'm using your code, and it's well done. I've done a lot of debugging myself and changes. You have problems with your Admin sections. For example, it seems that after install.php and the admin account is created, it is a negative rank number, and you code to that affect. However, when you try to make someone else an admin, their rank is 0, but do not have admin controls. This is because in the user.php file you have it that admins are x < 0. I had to change this to x <= 0. A few other places as well. Also, dismissing an admin is a problem. I didn't work for me, so I changed your formula, and just set it so that if you dismiss an admin, their rank is automatically 1. This will at least remove them from having admin control.

hmmm, strange error, haven't noticed it. *starts webserver and tries* Ah I understand (I'm not so fast ;)). Well I see what u mean. I have never tried using Level 0 members. therefore they do have an error :(. What I don't understand why you say a admin becomes a level 0 member? It just makes there number negative... which is exactly what goes wrong with a 0 member...
-0 = 0 :(
I have fixed this and it will come with the next release of ALS (1.5)

I love ASL but the new version had a bug for me. I tried to go to the oldmessages and there was an error. I thought maybe because it was empty, but I put a message in there and it said the same thing. oh by the way, if you would like a graphic validation, I can make it so there is a graphic validation when you submit your stuff to signup, before you are sent to the activation page. i have made many modifications to ASL to suit me like restrictions and suspensions along with user profiles and much more. Ask me if you would like my help for ideas for a version 1.6

YOUR CODE IS DANGEROUS!
It is because:
1.It saves the password in a cooky(md5), wich you can also use to login!
2.It saves the username in a cooky, NEVER DO THAT! always save the session ID in a cooky, not the username.
So, Check your code again and make sure It`s safe this time!

To start, this is a terrific piece of code. I've started integrating it with a site I'm putting together for my family to share photos.
I have two questions about the script:
Question 1) The messages.php script was not in the members folder, though the members area link tries to access it there. I copied the one from the folder above and it appears to be working fine. Is this correct or am I missing a file?
Question 2) I can't seem to locate an area to enter the news, are the news features a separate component or did I just hook up this part of the script incorrectly?

When it installs, I can't log in as admin, it says the username or password isn't correct. At the top of the page, there is an error 2002.
I can't do run install.php, because of "run: command not found", so I use php install.php, is this ok?
I also get the same errors as mayfang, the post above me. The filepaths are different of course, but the errors are the same.

I installe everything well and I like to install in my website but i cant even enter to the admin area, Cannot signup new users. When I enter the username and password as admin, admin respectilvely and clicks on the signin button nothing happense. Also if I try to create a new user it shows that you details cannot be added to the database beacuse of the following error.

No username given
No password given
No mailadres given
The username contains invalid chars.
The password contains to little chars.

The given e-mail adres is not valid
Please return to signup form and try again.

Nice Code , But having some error :-
When I enter the user name and enter the wrong password it shows the "Incorrect Login" . Also at the same time it updates the field "numlognfail" to 1 in "signup" table , now when I click the Refresh or when I Referesh the Page the code again updates the "numloginfail" to 2 in "singup" table and it goes on incrementing when I Referesh the Page

First off, great start. You did much better then when I first started.
1. First off, any protocol or file that's only purpose is to recieve and process data, make sure that a specific part is actually active, like the POST data's Submit Button name. If you really want to be good about it, create something that checks the HTTP_REFERER code and makes sure the information submitted came from the form.
2. Your mySQL query lines should have some kind of indicator that a mysql query failed. Such as: mysql_query("A query") or die("Query Failed"); You could be creative with it, and instead of die, make a function that logs everything about the error. Like Line, File, Date, IP, Cookie/UserID, Browser, etc. PHP has alot of stuff predefined. PHP has the $_COOKIE variable, the $_SERVER variable, the __LINE__ and you could just put the filename in with a string, and upload it to a databse like that.

Great script, does everything you need in a great login system. Great work, 5/5.
I am having a little trouble using the script in my web application, which uses a jquery sliding panel at the top of my page. For some reason, Within that panel, it does not recognise the echo($user_currently_loged); or global $user_currently_loged;, nothing is displayed in the panel at all, although it works on my other static pages.
I wanted the slide panel to display the login form if no user is logged in, and to display "welcome $user, you are logged in...etc".
Any ideas? I can be contacted on jmarks6@msn.com.

hi i am using your code and need it modified very slightly (may affect two files) i need it to be so that members can already be activated.
hopw you can help i have tryed but your code is way too advanced for my old code snippets and i have tryed guessing but didnt work,
also the passwords are stored in mysql as plaintext if pos can i make this md5 hash (i know its another two files) but again i have tryed guessing but you seem loads more expert like at coding please help if you can find the time.

With PHP 5.3x there is some functions that have been deprecated, (See http://php.net/manual/en/migration53.deprecated.php) so the code will work if you replace all
@$HTTP_POST_VARS[
with: $_POST[
Same with
@$HTTP_GET_VARS[
Replace with
$_GET[
And finally
$HTTP_SESSION_VARS[
With $_SESSION[
This is a great solution if you need to secure some pages without messing with .htaccess
