I think the free fmod dll from fmod.org is very good. They have VB6 API modules and sample VB6 code too. (If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)
I just found out fmod no longer includes VB6 API modules and examples but you can still get them from Version 4.34.20 under "previous versions of FMOD" (If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)
