Is this supposed to be an insult to Linux? If it is, then, you don't want to hear my rant on how Windows stinks (even though I code for it), and how Linux is superior in every way.

My GOD, do I ever agree with this code! DOWN WITH ALL THAT IS UNIX! Linux is NO GOOD! And it's NOT stable! Windows NT 4 with SP6 is GOD compared to this sorry excuse for an operating system... Bill Gates Bill Gates Bill Gates Bill Gates Ohhhhmmmmmmm

Um... I use Slakware Linux and it works just fine. Rebooting is no problem... Have you ever tried typing 'shutdown -r now' to reboot, or 'shutdown -h now' to shutdown? Linux and Unix are more stable than Win95/98, but I agree that Windows NT is quite stable. Unix/Linux provide more security than any other OS. The Solaris desktop environment for Unix , along with many others, do not have any viruses. I checked Network Associates website (Makers of McAfee), and there were 2 known viruses for Linux and Unix. Compare that to the 50,000+ for Windows.

I've had more NT crashes than Linux crashes. If you have problems with the above, then you obviously don't know how to install Linux. I'm not saying that it's okay to insult Windows either, because Windows works fine. If you have a problem with an OS, keep it to yourself.

Might I add... uhm... ignore my last post. It was a very "anti-Unix" time for me. =) Actually, I still dislike Linux, but I like *almost* all the other Unicies. Free/Open/NetBSD, BeOS, ScoUNIX.

However, when I compiled this, I got RedHat 6.0 =)

Actually, I just installed Windows 2000 Server... and might I add... it is higher than God. Fault tolerance is the best. Does Linux have fault tolerance? I think not.

I was talking to a computer consultant for Western Michigan University. He likes Linux and Windows "equally" you could say. His reasons:

Windows, because it works like a champ.
Linux, because he likes the underdog.

He also gave some good reasons as to why Linux is slightly worse than Windows. Back in the day, with the original Unix, if you ever did something stoopyd and useless, like, oh, say... TURN IT OFF, it's like taking the hard drive, shaking it, and saying "Here you go! Just TRY to work with this!" Linux has not totally avoided this. While it's *much* better than back in the day, it still has a *long* way to go.

He also said that 90% of the people who use Linux have this kind of mentality (somewhat similar to his) =)

Linux Zealot: WINDOWS S*U*C*K*S! LINUX RULES!
75% Windows tech: Why does Linux rule? Give me reasons.
Linux Zealot: BECAUSE IT'S NOT WINDOWS!
75% Wind

12/27/2000 10:25:31 AMUltimatum

I've also noticed something else... this may come as a shock to you Linux patriots... everytime they release a "newer, better distribution", it seems to become more and more like Windows, and I don't mean not graphically. The *actual operating system* has characteristics to it that really pull away from Unix and blend with Windows, such as a FAT-compatible file system (that still gets scrambled, might I add), a Windows emulator (give me a break...) and, of course, lnx4win. Now, I think I have it... when all you Linux gurus say that the latest distribution is the best and even better than Windows, you're saying that, since Linux is turning into Windows, it can be implied that Windows is still better. Gotcha. (Of course then, by the same token, am I saying that Windows sucks?)

Oh, by the way, Dizcmazter, to clear things up, Windows 3.1 is more multi-task than Linux... XWindows was made

1/19/2001 5:57:16 PMWolvenWraith

Woopety-Doo, I'm insulting Linux people! I have a permanent Linux server on my LAN, and not once has it crashed to anything other than faulty hardware. If that's not stability I don't know what is... However, I am in no way bashing Windows. Windows is a little more user-friendly to someone who's never seen a computer before. The whole idea of actually typing something in a command line confuses some people. heh, I probably use Linux and Windows about equally now, and the thing I love about Linux is almost EVERYTHING is open source on the OS. You can modify whatever you want, however you want... Oh and also, the whole "Linux is turning into Windows blah blah blah" idea... First of all, WINE is in no way associated with the Linux OS developers (oh and... I'd love to see Microsoft make a Linux Emulator! *Cough*). The GUI can be selected by the user, and the way someone has it set up can ran

Okay. I'mn *trying* not to be too Windows-biased, but so far, I have not seen a single Linux distro that has proven to run up to the standards of what has been claimed. Let me put it this way: if you HAVE to use Linux (as opposed to something better but still UNIX based, such as BeOS, *BSD, Solaris), use MANDRAKE. I've tried to use Slackware (wouldn't even install, let alone being the absolute *least* secure OS out there). I also just *recently* used Redhat 7.0 in PC Tech at trade school. Because of the encounter I had with it there, I now consider it a virus. It SCRAMBLED the hard drive, even after one successful 'shutdown -h now' and power down. I tried to re-install, but neither Disk Druid OR fdisk would remove the existing partitions.
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

1/25/2001 7:00:54 PMUltimatum

I had to use MS-DOS's fdisk to remove the Linux partitions, but for some reason, Linux decided to wipe out the logical DOS drive in the only extended partition and replace it with the swap partition. I found this INCREDIBLY annoying, especially when trying to delete the extended partition. (Trying to delete extended parition: "Cannot delete extended partition while logical drives exist." Trying to delete logical drive in extended partition: "No logical drives defined.") It took merely a Windows 2000 AS install and repair to fix the problem.

Ok, this is my LONG speech:
HAHAHAHAHA...
Ultimatum, you need to go back to school and just take ONE class on Linux. What do you think Mandrake, Red Hat, etc. are? They're slackware with added utilities. There is only ONE Linux OS, and that is slackware, not Red Hat, not Mandrake, JUST the kernal itself. And learn how to install the thing properly, if the partitions are messed up, it's YOUR fault, the OS doesn't mess with the partitions after the install, not anymore than Windows does.
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

2/10/2001 1:51:41 PMPatrick Steger

I'm gonna stay neutral on this Win vs. Linux thing, because frankly they're both good for different things. Windows has TONS of apps available for it, yet the number is shrinking rapidly. Linux has KILLER networking support and kick a55 multitasking (tho again Windows is cathing up). That 3.1 remark was just ignorant. Learn of a little thing called the terminal. That's the simplest way to do multitasking, there's also commands to do things in the background, but throwing the info out there is probably just a waste of my time.
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

2/10/2001 1:58:06 PMPatrick Steger

Do your research before you choose your OS, it's the most important software you have on your machine. From what I've observed of people, Windows is better if you don't want to do much research and if you get stuck you can call most anyone to fix it (and yea, it does have better resistance to things like power failures). Linux (and the like) is better if you want to trick your OS out and get down and dirty with the hardware (Also, doesn't have things like FAT unless you want to enable it for some idi0tic reason as it won't make your box any less vulnerable to powerloss). An easy analog is to compare it to a car. Windows is like having a 5.0 Mustang that you just go out and buy, ready to run, just turn the key and hit the gas.
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

2/10/2001 1:59:41 PMPatrick Steger

Linux is like a car you have the parts laying around for, and you have to build yourself, if you get started and find out you don't know what an engine is, you're out of luck, but otherwise, you can build your car however you see fit. People who dis Linux, but don't have a valid reason (like that not being able to reboot mess o rknow any commands and stare at a prompt all day) are ignorant, likewise are the Linux zealots who say it rules just because it's not something else are idi0ts too (tho I must confess, I've never met anyone like that personally, just going on what was said earlier.)

At the end of the day everyone chooses his own OS. Its a fact that Most people, who says Linux Rulez only say it to support each other, want to represent themselfs as hackers and things like this. On the other hand, the greate thing about Linux, for me, is that it is very twekable, very easy to use and if if know what you doing you will never have feeling when you work on windows like the one you get, when working on Linux. For me, spending loads of my time infront of computer, it is a greate advatage, I can trully control my computer and the computer is trully mine. It is, however, also true that most people whoa say Windows is crup, simply dont know what windows is. It may also be a good OS, but requires twice as much tweaking as required for Linux.
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

4/19/2001 10:01:42 PMCyberjet

If you want windows not only you have to run defragmenter, but remove the contents of your temp files mannually or perhaps write an utility for this. In either case, Both OS's are greate, but dont forget Windows was created by businessmen in order to make profit, whereas Linux was created computer geeks, who loves computers and they certainly did their best to give birth to Linux and we'll hardly every find out whats inside Windows. In conclusion, I am a heavy supporter of Linux and only use Windows due to a number of applications, which arent avaliable for Linux. Not a secret some of them are games :).

not to change the subject but I think someone needs to round out the topic. how about the crappy mac os? they try in every way to make it like windows while going for linux unfriendly interface and even worse they drag Linux down in the mud by basing their new version of mac os on the linux kernel! now how about that for low down insults?
I have not seen a single macintosh computer that impressed me ( my school had over a thousand of them ) and I really don't like the built in monitor stuff. what if you want a flat panel display? can't do because jobs is too busy running he dumb ### company into the ground!
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

7/11/2001 1:56:41 AMGraznar Media Network

OK two things. Windows does remove the TEMP files automatically. I think you may have to set this up but it will do it. An I have yet to touch ScanDisk or Defrag., and my computer works perfect.
Second, the new power G4's and G4 cubes allow you to have monitors, and actually most people buy a flat screen with the G4 Cube (just for style ;D).
Linux is an awesome OS, but Windows is obviously more suppoerted. But I also love how Linux/UNIX whatever is open source. That's awesome. I wish Windows would do that! But again, they're out for profit at MS...oh well that's my rant just to clear a few things up. :)

Linux is 100000 times better than windows, I was working with Visual Basic before but when i got LINUX i started c++ and java, just because Windows ain't working to well. Linuz Torvalds is the greatest person ever borned... Not that i hate window$ but Linux are way ahead.

I am a Linux newbie but i didn't have any problems with my slackware. This proves that Windows are a newbie os, where you are forced to do what microsoft want (msn Explorer :) I cant see how you can complain about slackware like that since its a LINUX os. When you say that we should use Mandrake you prove to the world that you are a simple newbie that dont know what you talk about........ (=

I use Mandrake linux 8.1 though I have been using it, and *BSD, for a while. I have had a total of 1 kernel panic. I only had to reinstall once(when I overwrote /dev/null(I was 12 at the time)). My uptime record is 6 months, and that was ended by a power outage :{. Linux can run on anything from my palmtop to my beowulf cluster. I think all programmers should flock to linux because of it's open sourcecode, and standardised compiler.

2/25/2002 5:03:47 PMTravis Goodspeed

I also have considerable experiance with windo$e, though I no longer use it. I think I had a grand total of 900 or so BSODs a year and my all time record for uptime was a mere 3 weeks(I was out of town)! It is painfull seeing so many obvious problems with a system and not having the chance to fix them! Not to mention the fun of setting up my own mainframe(dumb terminals(XTs, actual dumb terminals, and graphing calcs), x terminals(mostly 486s), and virtual terminals. Any decent linux box makes windo$e look like a pathetic point-n-click toy for challenged toddlers.

LINUX IS GOD

7/16/2002 3:07:28 PMTranslucent Mind

Linux and Windows are pretty much on the same level, each having different strengths and weaknesses. *Most* of the above posts talk about Linux and Windows in terms of just general use, but you can't really compare the two like that. Linux isn't meant to be the latest greatest OS for everyone, it's meant as an alternitive. Strengths: Open Source, Infaniatly Tweakable, Extreamly Stable, Awsome Networking and Server, it's FREE, and it is the future. What would take months for Microsoft to implement can take as little as a week for Linux, thanks to open source. It also has some of the widest hardware compatibility around, running on more hardware configs than Windows ever has.
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

7/16/2002 3:08:56 PMTranslucent Mind

Weaknesses: It is always being changed due to open source, so it will always have instabilites. It's not for the basic computer user, and because it doesn't shield you from your hardware (windows does) it can be real easy for the novice to screw themeleves over. Also, probably its biggest downfall (but thats quickly becoming less and less of an issue) is lack of software.
Windows;
Strengths: Very easy to use, shields user from hardware, millions of software titles, and you can get support for it very easily. Weaknesses: Limited customizability, prone to crashes, sooo many viruses, many security leaks, API memory leaks (for programmers), costs a lot, takes a while for updates to come out, and the new XP is a huge resource hog.
So, guys, when you go and get your OS, get the right OS for you. Linux for Servers, Programming, ETC. Windows for every day use.
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

7/16/2002 3:10:16 PMTranslucent Mind

Both OS's are great, it just depends on how you use them. Also, I would like to comment on Jeremy's post: you may not know this, but the Mac for quite some time was the most powerful computer you could get. Windows is a rip of the origonal MAC OS, and the only reason why Mac has fallen is because of lack of software and lack of hardware producers. If you ever look at any of the big time digital FX companies, they all use Macs.

You people are for real?

A few points:
Operating systems have many different theories and ideologies driving them, but the basic premise of an OS is simple: take hardware, and provide an interface to it that users can take advantage of to do everything they could wish to do in whatever endeavor they are currently attempting. (example for us geeks: life)

Linux started with the concept of chaos slowly moving towards order, but ignoring nothing and attempting to incorporate everything in existence into a (semi-)coherent and logical structure.

Windows is a commercial venture specifically designed to be quickly taken advantage of by the end-user. It starts with graphics and easy interfaces, THEN works on compatability, stability, and extensibility to other systems.
