Title: Tutorial for generating a form select list dynamically from a data base.
Date: 6/15/02
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have found many useful tips and code here on PlanetSourceCode.com and now I would like to share a little tidbit of
info that I find extremely useful in most of my applications.
I know most (probably all) of you have dealt with the select field within a form. When you have a ton of fields to choose from
I have found it useful and efficient to generate the option list dynamically from a database. This is most useful for forms that request states,
dates, or any information that is used more than once in an application. You can actually use this to create a custom tag and then just send the
database info dynamically in the attributes of the tag, I'll submit this later. Anyhow....

I have included a mock database (MS ACCESS) that is just a table of letters. Install the database to a folder and link it through the admin.
Then run just run the included cfm file from your web root and you will see how easy and useful this technique is. The file is commented so follow it carefully.

This is incredibly useful. I hope you found it helpful. HAPPY CODING!

For your own safety, please:
  1. Re-scan downloaded files using your personal virus checker before using it.
  2. NEVER, EVER run compiled files (.exe's, .ocx's, .dll's etc.)--only run source code.

If you don't have a virus scanner, you can get one at many places on the net including:McAfee.com

how about with two databases, say States and Cities. And I need the state listbox( say califonia is selected) to determine the cities related to state of califonia to appear on the city listbox.
