If you want to try out Portlets do the following. Download Apache Pluto. this is the Portlet Server. It is free. http://portals.apache.org.
I have used Netbeans 3.6 to bulid Portlets.
To Build portlets you have to include an Portlet API jar file that you will find in the following directory. c:\\pluto-1.0.1\shared\lib. This jar arcive must be visible in your java path.
If your are using Netbeans 3.6. You do as following. Right click Filesystems in your File explorer in Netbeans 3.6 and select Mount -> Select Mount Archive and navigate to the Pluto directory. c:\\pluto-1.0.1\shared\lib and select portlet-api-1.0.jar. Klikk ok to mount the archive.
To start pluto do the following. navigate your Explorer in windows to the directory where you installed pluto. select the folder named bin. doubleclick the bat file named startup. You should now get a command window on your screen.
When the pluto server is running open your favoritt browser and enter this adress. http://localhost:8080/pluto/portal.
You should now see the startpage to pluto.
Good luck with Potals
