One of the coolest features of ASP.NET is the viewstate...the feature that allows textboxes and other form controls to 'remember' their values when the user posts back to the form. This is a huge time saver over ASP classic. However, did you know that you can also take advantage of the viewstate with your own custom variables? It's easy...just do the following:

How is this different than using a session variable?

Ken,
A session variable will store the information server side...taking up server memory. This stores it client side in the viewstate on the form, which doesn't take up any server memory.

Will this work on redirects, or will it only work on a postback? I Thought the view state only works on a postback, am I wrong, or missing something?

Doug,

Yes...on postback only. It's actually implemented by .NET as a hidden input variable on the form...which doesn't work on redirects.
