Try this: Go to any website(shredder must be closed, not minimized). Then use internet options in control panel to 'clean' your history. If you go to your cookies folder and open index.dat with notepad, you will see where you've been after you had 'cleaned' up just browse around the file). Now use Shredder and look at index.dat, all cleaned.

You might have to build and run the exe (close VS) for the above to work, because of VS been open.

According to Microsoft: A file may not be shred using .NET languages on NTFS because of how the file is saved on the computer. Therefore, you would still leave fragments behind. I also make a program like your on 12th September, 2004. You can download it from here:

Any link for the microsoft article? Tested this with RStudio and could recover file, but not the file's original contents. Granted that someone with more expertise in that field might.

Tried compiling but get error on urlhist not found under the references. What do I need to do to get this working
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

10/6/2005 5:35:46 AMJustin Yates

First check under references for 'Urlhist' and if it's not there, right click on 'References' and click 'Add reference'. Then click the 'Browse' button on the far right and select the 'UrlHist.tlb'. 'Urlhist' should appear under 'References' now. Rebuild the solution and it should work.

Hey Brian, I've looked for an article like that and haven't found one yet. That was awhile ago, so you might have better luck now. I've been meaning to upgrade this to VS2005 and to add a few more features but I just don't have the time at the moment. If you find a microsoft article, please let me know. :)

Hey Naveen, I have converted this before in VS 2005 and it worked fine. It does need to be upgraded properly in VS 2005, but I just don't have the time these days. I suggest you try the following: First check under references for 'Urlhist' and if it's not there, right click on 'References' and click 'Add reference'. Then click the 'Browse' button on the far right and select the 'UrlHist.tlb'. 'Urlhist' should appear under 'References' now. Rebuild the solution and it should work. Hope this helps.

Tried this upgrade on 2 different computer's and they both worked. Bot were using VS 2005 Pro. Have you tried googling that error message or looking on MSDN? I can't replicate your error.

i dont have any idea . any possiblities to create or edit that url hist file. please give me some remedy
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

3/28/2007 6:05:26 AMJustin Yates

I don't have the source code for the url hist file. It's an interface library created by Eduardo Morcillo (look in the acknowledgements for his website). This file provides the functionality for clearing the history only. Clearing of cache works without this file. I had planned to write a new version of the the program that does not need this file, but just don't have the time these days to code for fun.

Hi Dave. I've sent you a upgraded version for the UrlHist. I tested with R-Studio and could recover the file (also NTFS), but not the files contents. The file just contained rubbish. Tested on doc, txt, jpg, bmp and avi.

Since I've formatted my pc and only installed VS2008, I can't run Shredder from source code either. I now have the same problem with the UrlHist type library. I will look at re writing the code in VS2008 with no UrlHist.
