(About the author)

I didnt always trust ntbackup to backup my exchange 2003 database files. So i created a .net application to stop the services, copy the files to a location where my tape drive will pick them up, and start the services back up again. This batch process also has email error reporting. So, you will see my smtp class and asynchronous socket class =) This uses the exchange services that i have in use. If you have more or less, change it yourself in the code. The same rule applies to database files.

  1. Re-scan downloaded files using your personal virus checker before using it.
  2. NEVER, EVER run compiled files (.exe's, .ocx's, .dll's etc.)--only run source code.

If you don't have a virus scanner, you can get one at many places on the net including:McAfee.com

Stopping the services is a terrible way to back up an exchange data store. If you don't trust NT Backup to do it, then you should invest in a 3rd party backup application rather than developing your own application that relies on shutting down your e-mail server.

intersting... what does a 3rd party app do since the file will be in use? By the way this still works fine till this day. Email is down for about 1 minute.
