This is the same version of the game I submitted last time, but I've removed the timer and now it uses a while loop for character movement, so it runs MUCH faster.

I just resubmitted this, and it now runs much better. I used a while loop to move / animate the character, and it runs much faster and more reliabley.

I cant load the program, i get a message saying
"'Retained' is an invalid key" So I cant get in. Any help?

I'm not sure what that error is or how it is caused. It could be that your not running VB6, I guess. Also, I was wondering if anybody else has tried running this on a Pentium 2 266 or higher. I'm using a while loop instead of a timer, so it might run too fast on faster systems. Any feed back on this would be very helpful.

Rob, here's how you fix the Invalid Key errors.
Open up the .vbp fle in notepad. If it says "Retained" is an invalid key, you'd delete the line similar to Retained=0
If it says something else is an invalid key, you delete that line too. That's how you convert VB6 to VB5

Map Editor: when i am making a house and I place the black Object and it asks for "What does this door point to?" I have no Idea of what goes there, after typing something i get an error message "Error '13', type mismatch" then after clicking debug it gives me a line which i see no errors in "a = InputBox(" Where does this door point to?", "Map Editor")" RPG engine: ok here goes : you know when the character moves, and it goes to the top of the map it takes you to the next map, first of all it eats my 450 intel, and second i wanted to know if you could make all the maps load on startup so its smooth scrolling no load time when going between maps, i've probily lost you but anyway, just make all the maps connect at startup so all load time is in begging only, well if you have followed at all please mail me at 'YoryAezel@aol.com',P.S please e-mail me if you can help me in anyway....

Everyonce in a while when I am walking around and it loads a new section of the map the game will basically freeze and wait a very long time before loading the new section. I'm running a 500 mhz 800x600 how can I fix this??

How do i get the map editor working?
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

9/16/1999 7:42:00 PMMatt

Nick: I'm working on having it load an entire area all at once (it'll display a little 'Loading...' message in the center screen while doing so) which should fix the problem if it stopping for a while when it loads a map. I really didn't think that'd be a prolem; it loads each map in less then a second on my computer.

Also, the Map Editor isn't ment to be a working program yet, it's not really to the point where I'd consider it usable. It won't be for a while, cause I'm more concerned with getting the actual engine up and running.
Also, almost got version 3 ready to post... It's got much better graphics and a cool GUI with nice hand drawn character pics... I'll be posting it soon.

Hey guys......... Heres a cool way to get rid of the retained key that VB6 leaves behind, without having to use notepad.

When you open the project, and you get the Retained Error, click yes and continue to load the project. If any OCX's aren't found keep loading.

Then be sure to reference any components that vb5 didn't pick up on.

then dave the project, and reload it!!

No notepad required.

I have a partically complete map editor that works with the format this source code uses, if anyone is interested. It's much nicer than the supplied one and more flexible.

12/29/1999 8:07:36 PMVincent "ProgramMan" Procassini

Hi. To clear this up once more, if you keep getting the "'Retained' is an invalid key" error, it's due only because of one reason. YOU'RE NOT USING VB6!

There is, however, a way to fix it. Edit the .vbp file in a TEXT EDITOR, NOT VB. There should be a line towards the bottom reading "Retained=0". Wipe out the whole line. Viola. Problem solved!

If it says you have an invalid key type value, your probrably using the deluxe learning edition of VB

Only 1 Question. What does it do? I walked every where and found nothing.

Wait... There's a picture missing. sa03.bmp or something. I went north, north, and north and it reported.
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

12/7/2000 5:51:27 PMMatt

It's not really suppost to do anything, it's just a basic engine that doesn't have anything like bad guys implimented. Really all you can do is walk around.

The missing maps are simply maps that I hadn't yet completed when I uploaded the code.
