The executable files keep getting stripped out of this file. Until we get that fixed, you can download a full zip of Source Search at: http://sourcesearch2.homestead.com/ Happy Searching! I've added ZIP capability to Source Search. Now you can just drag and drop any ZIP file into it and magically the file is unzipped and the VB files are scanned. There are also some new popup menus for the project list. ******* Ever worry that the code that you are downloading is malicious? Verify the code before you run it, with Source Search. Just drag an drop your project file onto the form and let Source Search check out the code against a customizable search dictionary. It will also enumerate through your project file to make sure that all referenced components are scanned. I have included a basic dictionary with the project. If anyone can find other terms to add to the dictionary, email me at goodhewc@hotmail.com and I will add your suggestion to the dictionary. Also, send me an email at the same address if you would like to receive dictionary updates by email. Please leave feedback and vote!

Very cool program. I check code downloaded from any site to see what it does before running it anyways but to know someone like yourself is making this easier for others is great. I am going to keep it as a cool utility.

Great Project. Since it was done in VB 6 (I'm running VB 5), could you send me a compiled version of the prog? Or send me to a site that I can download it? Thanks. 5 Planets go out to you.

Thanks for the project. Unfortunatly, my email client only accepts emails smaller than 2 MB, and anything over tells me it's going to delete them, and does so!!! If you wouldn't mind sending me the project again at: reqtechgeek@yahoo.ca, or targ@klingons.zzn.com.
Thanks

Could you send me a compiled version of Source Search 2.0. I only have VB5 and VB5 dosen't have the Replace function. Please also compile the control since the Retainted key is set to 1 and VB5 dosen't support that key. Normally the Retainted key is set to 0. Try to limit your size to 3.5 MB if you can. E-mail me Source Search without the source code, but with an .exe file and an .ocx file. You can e-mail me at marklu@myfavoritei.com.

Mark, this is how much you should worry about the command being implemented. Example: Lots of programs access files, so the OUTPUT keyword is probably being used legit. Not too many people use DELETESETTING so chances are this is a malicious attack on your registry. The severities are really just pulled out of my .... mind .... :)

Great app!
I like the little touch of scanning your own source code for the screen shot...

I added it to my necessary development tools, it not only scans for bad stuff it just lets a developer know what he/she downloaded!

Thanks!

Hi,

Great program, love it, going to rate it, after this post. I'm going to give you some performance tips, not ment as critism, but purely to make it better:

You test for empty string a lot. You test a string for being empty by comparing it to an empty string. String comparisons are slow, and generating an empty string requires overhead. It's faster if you do something like this: If Len(strSomeString) <> 0 Then.

Then, another one; You use variant Right, Left and mid functions. These are 80% slower when used with strings. It's better to use Right$, Left$ and mid$ functions.

Again, it's not ment as critism, just help.

D.

Hi Great program that you have made here. Not had much chance to have a good look through it,But a good idea for an improvement if it does not do it all ready and have not noticed. Is in the sl list view if you double click it opens the sub/function that the warning is referring to and highlight the line in question.

Great!, Bur there are some functions left to add. It would b great to drag'n'drop a whole folder of projects, and scan them all together. Then the reslt would be showed separately for every folder/project.
5 Globes!!

4/25/2002 3:31:30 AMJonathan Fors

Is it possible to mke this program act in background as a service or something, or that it scans all code that is downloaded from PSC or something. Would also be good to a function so you can right-click a visual basic file in explorer and choose "Scan with Source Search" or similar. Great Work!

5/6/2002 12:46:48 AMcdw

Potentially good, but as noted above it won't build (no response). Hence, can't give it more than one planet.

5/19/2002 6:06:27 AMTimothy Paling

Ummm....so am I missing something - this simply scans for key words right? I ran it through some of my big projects and it simply came up with a load of variable names i.e. Move (which was part of my movement matrice code for a game..). Does it actually take into account the code context?

If FSO.FileExists(lFile) Then AddFileToTree TV, lFile, tProgressBarContainer, tProgressBar, tProgressBarOffset, tProgressCaption, SD, LV, RZip

^ Active X Component Cannot Create Object

Also missing vbzIP_Control.ocx

Also you should just upload a compiled version to that site. So you won't be sending it out to 100 people.

3/12/2003 5:22:00 PM

For those having trouble getting this to work (as I did), download from http://sourcesearch2.homestead.com/ (as suggested in the main description above). Then unzip, making sure the appropriate files go into the VBZip subfolder. Then copy all DLL and OCX files from VBZip to the main folder. Then build the application. I also found that I had to load the two dictionaries using the menu.
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

3/12/2003 5:26:26 PM

I tried using this to scan itself and got an enormous number of apparent violations, many of which appear to be innocuous. It seems that when the code scans for something like "move", it hits every word that contains "move". Wouldn't it be better to look for whole word matches to cut down the list? Or does the dictionary depend on having things work the way they do?

OBSERVATIONS:
=============

I note the required DLL files for this project are 98KB and 226KB. I also note they are only available and MUST be downloaded from http://sourcesearch2.homestead.com/ where they could be altered by the author at any time, and without the knowledge of PSC. The author has chosen not to release the source code for these DLLs.

CONCLUSION:
===========
It's impossible for me to know everything these pre-compiled DLL files do.

I'm not saying the files are or are not malicious. However, my concern is that I cannot establish a chain of trust by scanning my files while trust of the scanner itself remains questionable.

SUGGESTIONS
===========
It would be nice if instructions were provided describing how to alter the source code so as to remove support for compressed zip files and, therefore, remove the requirement for the two DLL files.
(If this comment was disrespectful, please report it.)

3/31/2003 2:37:15 AMMinnow

I realize your concerns, but please note that these dll's are available on homestead because PSC has some sort of automatic binary removal utility that runs periodically and removes the binaries from the zip file. To get them back up, I must email the zip file back to the PSC moderators, then they have to put the file back on the web for me. I plan on releasing a new version of Souce Search in the next month or two, and these files will be removed. Thank you for your concern.

6/26/2003 1:04:59 AMDana Seaman_

Very nice. It does however flag a ton of API stuff that is pefectly legit. How about a second dictionary of valid phrases so that lines containing phrases like API "DeleteDC" and "DeleteObject" would be valid but "Delete"(from main dictionary) would not."

You get 5 million out of 10 for style - hehe

I've downed from the site mentioned in the maintext and I'm going to have a look at the code - just to see how you've put it together.

A suggestion for the zip-part of SS2: how about moving the ZIP-scanner to a plug-in instead of built-in ? I've seen a couple of samples on doing plug-ins but havnt had the time to go through them.

Keep cool ;)

cmdRemove.Caption = "Foo" is matched on "MOVE" keyword. Why is that? You should've used regular expressions to check code. Although slower, it would produce better results.

Tanks a lot.. though some of its findings are false positive but it helps us a lot to easily check each malicious function..
For others ho want to update its dictionary just open the following files with note pad:
Dictionary Update 2.0.1.sdd
Startup Dictionary.sdd
And add the entry you want to be identify following the format inside it.

Very impressive! Works find on my Windows 7 PC.

It would be helpful (and I may add, if I use this) to have a way to cycle through all the microphone options until you get to the one that actually has sound coming in and select that one so you don't get support calls from customers saying "it doesn't work" b/c they selected the wrong mic.

I compiled the ocx first, then, having backed-up the source search VBP I deleted the reference to the ocx then opened that project ignoring errors and then added the ocx via the components and then compiled to exe. Thank you for your very useful program.
